Alchemy and Enchanting

Post by Ailander »

So how I explained in the crafting post, we implemented our own system for crafting that keeps materials and items typical of the Forgotten Realms but we rearranged a bit the way of doing it (we went completely away from the D&d 3.5 system on this). As for the actual skills

Alchemy: Allow to prepare potions and chemical items (bombs, acids, etc) to improve and enhance other items. It is also the only way to produce raw arcane gems

Arcane Gems: This is the jewel (pun intended) of the system. Creating magical items is not straightforward and linear like d&d 3.5 was (for example, you can't simply create a +2 longsword or a +x +1dx shortsword). You can create magical gems that can be "inserted" in an item to improve its already existing abilities.

if you remember the shorts in the other post, through crafting you can create items with "sockets". Every item in the game (even those not crafted) have a default value of 0 sockets. While crafted items comes with existing sockets, items found around will not possess per se any socket, but you can still create them with some special gems that adds slots.

For example, i have a +1 longsword that i have bought from a merchant. Look what happens

As you can see, it turned into a +1 enhancement +1 cold damage. I managed to achieve this thanks to a blue gem that creates a socket for the item. There are (not all available for crafting at the moment) 5 tiers of gems and in order from the weakest to the strongest are: green, blue, orange, purple, gold

Among blue and purple are the only tier that allows an extra socket on items (for a total of 2 sockets for any generic items) and so far there are craftable items with 3 sockets in it (so a crafted weapon can potentially have 5 sockets)

The other peculiarity of the gems system is that it not only can apply a new effect on a weapon, but can as well enhance an existing one already and the gems can be interchanged between them how many times someone wishes without requirements for any roll (the roll is required only to create the enchanted gem itself). Here is an example

This way a player can customize their magic weapons and change some of their abilities on the fly whenever they need to face a different foe and not have to bring with them an arsenal.

Now, for the sockets, we are still constantly changing the number of sockets or caps depending on player's experience but here is how it works for now:
Non crafted items: none
Iron crafted items: 1
Copper crafted items: 1
Bronze crated items: 1
Silver crafted items: 2
Coldiron crafted items: 2
Steel crafted items: 2
Starmetal crafted items: 3
Darksteel crafted items: 3
Gold crafted items: 3

each tier of metal has their own peculiar bonuses to jewelry, weapons, armos and shields. For example, a starmetal ring grants a +1 to all saves by deful while a darkstell weapon grants a +2 enhancement by default.

Be mindful, every tier has still a somewhat limit of power it can become (check it in the Tier items post)
