Post by Ailander »

(At the moment, there is no actual subrace implemented for them, but i leave them here both for topic of discussion and give a general idea to people on the ethnic groups in Toril)

If you seek more informations, the Wiki is your friend!

Chondatan
One of the more common human ethnicities, found in great number throughout the Western and Eastern Heartlands. They were a hardy, risk-taking folk who were apt to travel or take on new endeavors to better their lives and those of their loved ones.Their prominence throughout the Realms was due in large part to the extensive trade routes they established, rather than military conquest

The Chondathans of Faerûn were known for their affinity for the mercantile life. They were skilled and cunning traders, who judged the people they met in their many travels based the wealth and influence they had acquired. Despite their proclivity for commerce, they were a people of their word, if only for their reputation's sake rather than any moral reasoning.

They were a slender, tawny or fair-skinned people with brown hair that ranged from a light, almost-blond hue to a darker color that could be mistaken for black. Chondathans were often somewhat taller than other humans, though not in all instances, and often had green or brown eyes. Those living north and west of the Inner Sea tended to resemble the lighter-skinned Illuskans while those who inhabited the lands south of the body of water had the darker skin that was common of the Netherese-descended ethnic groups.

The Chondathan people are fiercely competitive, and extremely self-reliant. They look upon acts of altruism and selflessness with bemusement and surprise. Those Chondathans who took on the life of adventure were attracted by the potential riches and fame they could claim for their own.

Calishite
Calishite was the name given to the majority of humans who came from Calimshan. The variant "Calimshite" was also used."Calimite", however, was a deeply insulting name for these people.

Calishites usually had dusky brown skin, brown hair and brown eyes. They are also on average a little shorter and of slighter build than most humans of other ethnicities and are descendants of the slaves of the genies who ruled great empires south of the Marching Mountains. These ancestors were not native to the continent of Faerûn. After the djinni Calim's power dwindled, the Calishites were able to free themselves of the genies' yoke and founded the nation of Coramshan in −6060 DR. Since this time the Calishite race has expanded and migrated to various regions.

The pervading Calishite view was that they are the rightful rulers of all the land south and west of the Sea of Fallen Stars. They have a tendency to look on the northern cultures as being short-lived barbarian cultures barely worthy of notice. This, however, did not prevent them from trading with these nations.

Damaran
Damarans are an ethnic group of humans that are prominent in Damara, within the Bloodstone Lands, as well as several other regions in the Cold Lands and northeastern Faerûn as a whole. They are descendants from the integration of the Nars, Rashemi and Sossrim tribes that were scattered following the fall of Netheril, along with their migrating Chondathan cousins. They also made up large portions of the northern and north-eastern realms of Impiltur, Thesk and the Vast

Damarans are of average height and build for humans, with skin tones that ranged from fair to tawny. Their hair is usually brown or black, and their eye color varied widely, though brown is most common. Those who lived south of the Earthfast Mountains tended to more closely resemble Chondathans, while those from Vaasa appeared more like the Sossrim people.

Lawfulness is prominent in nations with large Damaran populations, with the exception of Aglarond, with its significant elven influence, the Vast, whose population leaned on the Chondathan side, and the city of Telflamm, home to its Shadowmasters. Save for these exceptions, those who were seen as having unscrupulous morals were often shunned from Damaran-centric societies. In contrast to their strong morality, or perhaps as a result of it, Damarans were seen as a proud and stubborn folk.

While many individual Damarans have taken up their culture's passion for adventure, hearkening to their generational struggle to reclaim the Easting Reach from the demons of Narfell, they have, as a whole largely stayed put in the same region of Faerûn. Those that stayed in their ancestral home often chose lives as farmers, lumberers or miners.

They tend to view life as a series of challenges that must to be overcome. Trust and respect were never freely given, but earned, and life was meant to be spent in the services of a greater good. The history of their people was never revered and nobles were not placed upon a golden pedestal; rather, the failures of their forebears served as lessons against the hubris of unchecked power.True heroism and self-sacrifice is held in the highest regard among the Damaran people. People are judged by their actions rather than their birth, as was common within other cultures.

Illuskan
Illuskan was the name usually given to humans who lived in the Sword Coast North. They were also known as Northlanders. They are tall, fair-skinned people. Most have blue or steel gray eyes. Those living on the islands in the Trackless Sea and Icewind Dale had more blond hair, and slightly less red and brown. Those in the Sword Coast North and surrounding lands had more raven black hair, from their significant Netherese heritage

The Northlanders originated in the island of Ruathym. The island was thought of as their ancestral home, from where they spread into other islands in the Sea of Swords and into the continent following the founding of the city of Luskan.

Mulan

The Mulan are a human ethnic group non-native to Toril, typically found in east Faerûn. Mulan are typically tall and thin with a sallow skin tone and brown or hazel eyes. Lower-class Mulan of Thay, Mulhorand, and Unther frequently had significant Rashemi or Turmish blood, resulting in darker complexions. Pure Mulan features were rare in Chessenta because of mixing with the nearby Chondathans. Mulan often had little body hair, ranging in color from black to dark brown, and all nobles and many other Mulan of both genders shaved any hair they did have. Mulan generally preferred simple, unadorned clothing, particularly those that worshiped the god-kings, so as not to outshine them. Other differences in appearance varied by region; for example, Mulan Red Wizards of Thay were often heavily tattooed.

The Mulan were first brought to Toril in −4366 DR, through twin gates to another world created by wizard rulers of the Imaskar Empire. They were used as slaves and for many years their fervent prayers went unanswered because of the magical Imaskari barrier. However, with the help of Ao, mortal avatars of the slaves' deities from the Mulhorandi pantheon were able to circumvent the barrier and defeat the Imaskari in −2488 DR.

Mulan were a generally arrogant, conservative group, resistant to change and convinced of their cultural superiority over all others. In Thay, many even believed they were above the gods. Mulan felt they were more civilized, inventive, and capable than other ethnic groups and believed strongly in the values of order and discipline. All upper- and middle-class Mulan received at least some education, and apprenticeship at a young age was common. Mulan followed the rigid class structures of their society, and the practice of slavery was commonplace.

They also had a strong tradition in the use of magic, but disagreed over the pursuit of arcane versus divine magic. The arcane arts were lauded in Thay, but distrusted in Mulhorand and Unther.

Rashemi

The Rashemaar, also known as Rashemi outside their native land, are a human ethnic group native to Rashemen and Thay.
Most Rashemaar are short and muscular, with a hardy physique. They commonly have dusky skin, dark eyes, and thick black hair. Men were especially hairy and might maintain a thick dark beard; baldness was virtually unknown in their culture. Women often wore their hair long and elaborately plaited.

Elders were respected for their wisdom and mental strength while children were expected to earn their place in the world, rather than having it handed to them. Most young adult Rashemi traveled extensively for a year as part of a coming-of-age ritual called dajemma (also spelled darjemma), resulting in a population with considerable worldly knowledge. The Rashemi placed little value in the accumulation of wealth, and expressed no shame for their bodies. They thought of themselves as inhabitants of a harsh and beautiful land ruled by spirits and rarely displayed the arrogance of other human ethnic groups. They viewed life as a series of challenges to face and defeat and placed a high value on individual accomplishment and strength. They tended to focus on physical feats in Rashemen, while the Rashemi of Thay preferred displays of magical power.

The Rashemaar were descendants of the nomadic tribes that were employed as mercenaries by Mulhorand and helped win the Orcgate Wars of −1075 DR to −1069 DR. They then forged the empire of Raumathar, which rivaled the Mulhorand and Unther empires in its day.In the centuries after, they fought many battles against the Narfell empire over the contested Rashemi tribal lands on the Priador plateau. Finally in −150 DR, the empires suffered a mutual defeat in a massive fiery clash involving an avatar of Kossuth and an army of fiends led by the demon lord Eltab. The armies of the Mulhorand empire quickly swept in and reoccupied the Priador plateau, and their descendants continued to subjugate the Rashemi that lived in Thay in the years leading up to and during the Era of Upheaval.

Tethyrians

Tethyrians are a human ethnic group common all over West Faerûn between Calimshan and Silverymoon. They were proud, independent people who tended to be the most tolerant of the ethnic groups in Faerûn

Tethyrian culture is a mix of Calishite, Chondathan, Illuskan, and Low Netherese. Because of their diverse heritage and history of enslavement, Tethyrians valued independence and freedom. They consider slavery to be the greatest sin and distrust powerful kingdoms and empires, preferring to live in city-states as opposed to large realms. They are proud of their multi-ethnic heritage and independent life-styles; however, this resulted in them rarely uniting in common cause with others that were not their immediate neighbors.

Due to them being divided into tribes and clans in the past, Tethyrians valued loyalty to friends and family above all else. Without a family to hold dear, a Tethyrian would transfer loyalty to a guild, settlement, company, band, or other similar organization. Tethryians that take up adventuring tended to do so to right a wrong done to their family, clan, or tribe or to set their own course in life

Native human tribes south of the Marching Mountains were absorbed into the lower class of the nation of Coramshan, in the region that would later become Calimshan, around -6100 DR. Humans in what is now western Tethyr, originally under the rule of High Shanatar, were enslaved by Calishites by -2600 DR when High Shanatar fell. The mixing of Calishites with these various human groups that were conquered led to the Tethyrians, who began a series of revolts during the period of -670 DR and -370 DR
